U.S. Stocks Drop Most in Five Weeks After General Electric's Earnings Miss
In the midst of criminal proceedings against
Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, voters shouldn't stop asking politicians to
answer for the criminally bad state of Michigan's economy. Their minimum wage
increases in recent years have killed jobs for those most in need of work.
Detroit's automakers face an uphill struggle
this year after losing two of the underpinnings that supported the early stages
of their turnaround plans: a strong economy and plentiful credit.

By: Peter Schiff,
Euro Pacific Capital, Inc.
Having
neither the will nor the means to confront our major economic challenges,
Washington
is instead hanging its hopes on words alone. This week, despite the
clearest signs yet that the dollar is in critical condition, President
Bush and Treasury Secretary Paulson tried to provide reassurance by once again
invoking the name of the mythical “strong dollar policy”. Meanwhile
across town, with the latest crop of inflation figures pointing to the greatest
price surges in a generation, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke tried to do the
Administration one better by insisting that inflation expectations remained
“well anchored”, and that stagflation was nowhere in sight MORE

TREASURY DEPT. PROPOSES NEW POWERS FOR FED
WASHINGTON — The Treasury Department will
propose on Monday that Congress give the Federal Reserve broad new authority to
oversee financial market stability, in effect allowing it to send SWAT teams
into any corner of the industry or any institution that might pose a risk to the
overall system.
The proposal is part of a sweeping blueprint
to overhaul the nation’s hodgepodge of financial regulatory agencies, which
many experts say failed to recognize rampant excesses in mortgage lending until
after they set off what is now the worst financial calamity in decades.
